CURRICULUM OUTLINE

At Altona Primary School our aim is to provide the best possible social, emotional and educational outcomes for each and every student. Altona Primary School provides a wide range of learning opportunities, allowing every student to experience success. At Altona Primary School the curriculum is integrated into topics which are studied throughout each term, using the Inquiry Learning Model. The school has developed a unique set of Throughlines, which act as the overarching themes that get revisited through-out the topics as they are taught from Years P-6. This enables all the various curriculum areas to be linked together in a meaningful context.

The Teaching and Learning cycle is based on assessing what the children need or want to learn, planning exciting, relevant and meaningful activities to develop children's understandings and then reassessing to determine future learning needs.

The Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) are the basis for curriculum and assessment in Victorian Schools. The VELS were developed by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority through consultation and collaboration within education sectors and the broader community. The VELS provides the means for all Victorian schools to use research-based curriculum thinking to better prepare students for success at school and beyond.

The VELS identify three core and interrelated strands from the Prep to Year 10 curriculum. Each strand has a number of domains which describe essential knowledge.

The three core strands are:

Physical, Personal and Social Learning which incorporates four domains: Health and Physical Education, Interpersonal Development, Personal Learning and Civics and Citizenship.

Discipline Based Learning which incorporates six domains: The Arts, English, Humanities, Languages other than English (LOTE) , Maths and Science.

Interdisciplinary Learning which incorporates four domains: Communication: Design, Creativity and Technology; Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Thinking Processes.
